Require Terms & Conditions Before Checkout

What this setting does

You can add a required “I agree” checkbox to your cart drawer. If a customer tries to check out without accepting, they will see an error message and checkout will not open until they check the box.

This is helpful when you need customers to agree to Terms & Conditions, a refund policy, or subscription terms before they buy.

Set up the required checkbox

In the app admin, go to Cart Editor.

Open the section for the Buttons / Checkout area (the area with your Checkout button).

Enable the setting for a Terms & Conditions (or Agreement) checkbox.

Turn on Required so customers must accept before checkout.

Click Save in the editor.

Customize the agreement text (and add links)

You can change the text next to the checkbox to match your store rules. For example:

  • “I agree to the Terms & Conditions”
  • “I agree to the Refund Policy”
  • “I understand this is a pre-order”

Add a clickable link

If the text field supports links, add your link directly inside the text. A common format is:

<a href="https://yourstore.com/policies/terms-of-service" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Terms & Conditions</a>

Use target="_blank" so the policy opens in a new tab. This helps customers keep their cart open.

If your editor does not accept links in that field, keep the text simple (no HTML). You can still place policy links elsewhere in your theme or in the cart content areas.

Customize the error message

Set a clear message that shows when someone clicks Checkout without checking the box. Good examples:

  • “Please accept the Terms & Conditions to continue.”
  • “You must agree before checking out.”
  • “Please confirm you have read our refund policy.”

Keep the error message short and specific. Customers should understand what to do in 1–2 seconds.

Confirm checkout is blocked (testing)

Add any product to your cart so the cart drawer opens.

Leave the checkbox unchecked, then click Checkout.

Expected result: checkout does not open and your error message shows.

Check the box, then click Checkout again.

Expected result: checkout opens normally.

Will this stop customers from checking out?

Only if they do not accept the checkbox. Once it is checked, they can check out like normal.

Can I link to more than one policy?

Yes, if the text field supports links. You can include more than one link (for example, Terms and Refund Policy) as long as the sentence stays easy to read.

Where will the checkbox show?

It appears near your checkout area inside the cart drawer, so customers see it right before they click Checkout.
