Add-Ons (Shipping Protection and Product Add-Ons)

What cart add-ons do

Cart add-ons are optional extras customers can add with a simple checkbox in the cart drawer. Common examples are shipping protection, order insurance, or a small product add-on (like a warranty, gift wrap, or a bonus item).

Before you start

  • Shipping protection is usually a paid add-on item that gets added to the cart like a normal product.
  • Product add-ons are regular products you pick from your Shopify catalog.
If you want to show recommended products (not a checkbox add-on), use the Product Upsells in the Cart Drawer feature instead.

Create a checkbox add-on

In the app, go to Cart Editor and open the section for Add-Ons (sometimes labeled Shipping Protection or Cart Add-ons).

Enable the add-on block so it can show inside your cart drawer.

Select the item the checkbox will add to the cart:

  • Shipping protection: choose your shipping protection product (or the product you created for this).
  • Product add-on: pick any product from your catalog.
Use a product that is available for purchase (in stock, active, and available to the right markets). If it can’t be added to cart, the checkbox may not work.

Customize the text customers see next to the checkbox:

  • Title: keep it short and clear (example: Shipping protection).
  • Description: explain what they get (example: Covers lost, stolen, or damaged packages).
Write the description in 1–2 short sentences. Most customers scan.

If the setting is available, choose whether the checkbox starts:

  • Unchecked (recommended in most stores)
  • Checked by default
If you pre-check a paid add-on, make sure your wording is very clear so customers don’t feel surprised at checkout.

Save your changes and preview your cart drawer. Add a product to your cart and test the checkbox on and off.

Tiered pricing (price changes by cart total)

If your add-on supports pricing tiers, you can charge different amounts based on the customer’s cart total. This is commonly used for shipping protection (for example, $0.99 for small carts and $2.99 for larger carts).

How pricing tiers work

  • The app checks the current cart total and matches it to a tier.
  • When the customer checks the box, the correct priced add-on is added.
  • If the cart total changes, the app may switch the tier to match the new total.

In your add-on settings, enable Tiered pricing (or similar).

Create tiers using cart total ranges (example):

  • $0–$49.99 → $0.99
  • $50–$99.99 → $1.99
  • $100+ → $2.99

Add items to your cart to reach each tier. Turn the checkbox on and confirm the add-on price matches the tier.

If you don’t need price changes by cart total, keep tiered pricing off and use one fixed-price add-on.

Best practices (recommended)

  • Keep it optional: customers should clearly understand it’s an add-on.
  • Use clear names: “Shipping protection” or “Package protection” is easier than “Coverage”.
  • Explain the benefit: one short line is enough.
  • Don’t add too many: 1–2 checkbox add-ons is usually the sweet spot.

Common issues

  • Make sure the add-on product is Active in Shopify.
  • Check that it’s in stock (or allowed to sell when out of stock, if you use that setting).
  • Confirm the product is available in the customer’s market/currency if you sell internationally.
  • Review your tier ranges so they don’t overlap.
  • Make sure every cart total has a matching tier (including very high totals).
  • Test with carts right at the edge (example: $49.99 and $50.00).
  • Rewrite the description in simpler words.
  • Avoid big promises. Say what it does in plain language.
  • If it’s pre-checked, consider switching it to unchecked by default.
