FBT Placement Rules and Discount Application

What this page controls

In your Frequently Bought Together (FBT) offer, you can control two important things:

  • Where the offer shows (which product pages and/or collection pages).
  • When the discount applies (always, or only when the trigger product is in the cart).

Placement: choose where the offer renders

Placement rules decide which storefront pages can show the FBT offer.

Common placement options

  • Product pages: The offer shows when a shopper views a product page.
  • Collection pages: The offer shows when a shopper browses a collection page.
Names and layout can look a little different depending on your theme, but the idea is the same: you choose which page types (and which products/collections) can show the offer.

In the app, go to your Frequently Bought Together section and open the offer you want to edit.

Look for settings like Placement, Where to show, or Visibility.

Select where the offer should appear:

  • Products: choose specific products (or a rule like “all products” if available).
  • Collections: choose one or more collections where the offer is allowed to show.

Save your changes, then preview on a product page or collection page that matches your rules.

If you want the offer to feel “built in,” start with a small set of products or a single collection. Once you confirm it looks right, expand your targeting.

Examples

  • Example A (only on one product): Show the offer only on the “Coffee Maker” product page.
  • Example B (whole category): Show the offer on the “Coffee” collection so shoppers see it while browsing.
  • Example C (tight control): Show on product pages for 5 bestsellers, and nowhere else.

Discount application: choose when discounts apply

Discount timing decides when the discounted price is allowed to apply to the bundled items.

Option 1: Always apply the discount

When set to Always, the discount can apply to the selected items even if the trigger product is not in the cart.

  • Best when: you want a simple deal that works anytime.
  • What to expect: shoppers may get the discount even if they add only the add-on item(s).

Option 2: Apply only when the trigger product is in the cart

When set to Only with trigger product, the discount applies only if the trigger product is in the cart at the same time.

  • Best when: you want a true bundle (buy X, get Y discounted).
  • What to expect: if the shopper removes the trigger product, the discount should stop applying.
“Always apply” can cause surprise discounts if customers find a discounted item without buying the main product. If that’s not what you want, use “Only with trigger product.”

Inside the same FBT offer, find the section for Discount or Discount rules.

Select one of the discount timing options:

  • Always
  • Only with trigger product (wording may vary)

Test in your storefront preview:

  1. Add only the discounted add-on item(s) and check if a discount applies.
  2. Add the trigger product + add-on item(s) and check if a discount applies.
  3. Remove the trigger product and confirm the discount behavior matches your setting.

Quick checklist (so the offer shows correctly)

  • The page you are viewing matches your Products/Collections placement rules.
  • The cart contains the trigger product if you chose “Only with trigger product.”
  • You saved the offer after changes.

This usually means your placement rules are limiting where the offer can show. Re-check the offer’s Products and Collections selections and confirm the product you’re testing is included.

If your discount timing is set to Only with trigger product, the trigger product must be in the cart. Add the trigger product first, then add the bundled item(s) and check again.

Yes. Placement controls where the offer appears. Discount timing controls when the discount applies. You can show the offer on a collection page, but still require the trigger product to be in the cart for the discount.

Tip for clean results: keep your placement rules and discount timing aligned. If you require the trigger product, it’s often best to show the offer mainly on that trigger product’s page (or closely related products/collections).
