Discounts, Rewards, or Free Gifts Not Applying

Before you start

This page helps when a reward tier, discount, or free gift shows in the cart, but it does not unlock or apply.

Test with a real cart on the storefront (not just the editor preview). Add the exact products and reach the exact amount needed for the tier.

Quick checklist (most common fixes)

Open your cart and check the number used for the goal (example: $50 or 3 items).

  • If your tier is based on cart total, make sure your cart total reaches the goal the app is using (see details below).
  • If your tier is based on item count, make sure you added enough eligible items (and not just increased quantity on an ineligible item).

If you use Shopify Markets, the same reward can have different rules by market (country/currency). A market mismatch is a top cause.

If the gift is out of stock, unpublished, or not allowed to be sold, it may not add to cart.

Shopify has limits on which discounts can combine. If a code or automatic discount is already active, your reward discount may not apply.

Common cause #1: Tier conditions are not met

A tier only unlocks when the cart meets the exact rule you set (goal amount or item count) and the cart items match any targeting rules you chose.

What to check

  • Goal type: Is the tier based on cart total or item count?
  • Goal value: Are you reaching the exact amount/quantity?
  • Eligible items: If the tier is limited to certain products/collections, make sure the cart contains those items.
  • Rounding: If your goal is close (example: $50), a cart total like $49.99 will not unlock.

Why this happens: Many stores expect the tier to use the “final total after discounts,” but the tier may be set to use a different cart number (like subtotal). The result is “I hit $50” but the tier still looks locked.

Fix: Re-test with a clean cart

Remove any discount codes and turn off any automatic discounts you are using for the test.

Add products that you know should count toward the tier. If the tier targets a collection, use items from that collection.

Don’t aim for the exact number. Go a little higher (example: aim for $55 instead of $50) to avoid edge cases.

Common cause #2: Market mismatch (Shopify Markets)

If you set up market-specific rewards, the cart will only use the rules for the customer’s current market. If you test in the wrong market, you may see different goals, different rewards, or no reward at all.

Signs this is the issue

  • The goal amount looks right in your admin, but customers in another country never unlock it.
  • The reward works in one currency (like USD) but not another (like EUR).
  • It works for you, but not for a customer using a different country selector or a different domain/subfolder.

Fix: Verify the active market during testing

Use your storefront’s country/currency selector (if you have one) to switch markets.

Refresh the page after switching markets so the cart drawer loads the correct rules.

Clear the cart and add items again while you are in the correct market.

If you use multiple domains or subfolders for markets, make sure you are testing on the correct one. A market can change based on the URL the customer is using.

Common cause #3: Free gift product is not available

Free gifts are real Shopify products. If the gift product can’t be added to cart, the gift reward can’t complete.

What to check in Shopify for the gift product

  • Inventory: The gift variant is in stock (or you allow selling when out of stock).
  • Publication: The product is published to the right sales channel (Online Store).
  • Status: Product is Active (not Draft/Archived).
  • Variants: The specific variant you selected as the gift still exists.

Fix: Make the gift easy to add

Choose a gift product/variant you don’t change often (avoid removing variants after setup).

Set inventory so the gift does not unexpectedly run out during a campaign.

On the storefront, open the gift product page and add it to cart like a customer would. If it won’t add, the free gift won’t add either.

Good to know: If your store blocks checkout for certain products or uses special purchase rules, the gift product may also be blocked.

Common cause #4: Shopify discount eligibility and stacking limits

Shopify controls how discounts combine. Even if your reward discount is set up correctly, it may not apply if another discount is already active and Shopify won’t stack them.

Typical stacking conflicts

  • A customer applies a discount code, and your reward discount won’t apply.
  • An automatic discount is running (example: “10% off everything”), and the reward discount is blocked.
  • A product already has a sale price or compare-at price, and you expect an extra discount on top.

Fix: Test discount stacking the right way

Remove all discount codes. Temporarily pause automatic discounts for the test if needed.

Unlock the tier and confirm the discount/gift works by itself.

Add your code or automatic discount back and see which one causes the conflict.

If Shopify won’t combine two discounts, the app can’t force Shopify to stack them. In that case, you’ll need to choose which discount should win (reward vs code) or adjust the promotion so only one discount runs.

FAQ (fast answers)

Most of the time, another discount is already active and Shopify will not stack them. Remove any discount code and re-test.

Check the gift product in Shopify: it may be out of stock, not published to Online Store, archived, or the selected variant was deleted.

This is usually a Shopify Markets issue. The customer is in a different market/currency, so different reward rules apply. Test while switched to the same market.

Make sure you are meeting the exact tier condition (cart total vs item count) and that the items in the cart are eligible. Try going above the goal amount to confirm.

When you’re done

After you make changes, re-test with a clean cart and no discounts first. Then test again with your normal discounts and market settings to make sure everything works for real customers.
