Subscription Upgrades
What subscription upgrade prompts do
Subscription upgrade prompts are small messages (and optional buttons) shown inside your cart drawer. They invite customers to switch a one-time purchase to a subscription.
This helps customers understand the value of subscribing, like saving money, getting deliveries on a schedule, or never running out.
Before you start
- Make sure the product in the cart has a subscription option in Shopify (for example: “Subscribe & save”).
- Decide what benefit you want to highlight (example: “Save 10%”, “Free shipping”, or “Cancel anytime”).
Turn on subscription upgrade prompts
In the app admin, go to Cart Editor.
Look for a section named Subscription Upgrades (or similar). This is where you control prompts shown in the cart.
Turn On the subscription upgrade prompt. If you can choose where it shows, pick a spot customers will notice, like near the item details or near the checkout area.
Set the visibility rules so the prompt only shows when it makes sense, such as:
- Only for items that support subscriptions
- Only when the item is currently one-time purchase
This keeps the cart clean and avoids confusing shoppers.
Write clear, simple messaging
Your goal is to answer one question fast: “Why should I subscribe?”
Recommended message structure
- Short headline: one sentence
- One key benefit: savings, convenience, or flexibility
- Clear action: “Switch to subscribe”
Keep it short. Customers decide quickly in the cart. Use 1–2 short lines instead of a long paragraph.
Example messages you can copy
- Headline: Subscribe & save
- Body: Save 10% on every order. Cancel anytime.
- Button: Switch to subscription
- Headline: Never run out
- Body: Get this delivered every month. Skip or cancel anytime.
- Button: Subscribe instead
- Headline: Subscribe with confidence
- Body: Change your delivery schedule anytime.
- Button: Choose subscription
- Headline: Subscribe for free shipping
- Body: Get free shipping on every subscription delivery.
- Button: Upgrade to subscription
Customize the look (so it feels like your brand)
Subscription prompts work best when they look like part of your cart (not an ad). In the Subscription Upgrades settings, adjust these items if available:
- Background color (light highlight works well)
- Border (subtle outline or left accent line)
- Text color (high contrast for readability)
- Button style (match your main checkout button, but slightly less “strong”)
- Spacing (enough padding so it’s easy to read on mobile)
Mobile tip: Use bigger text and a single clear button. Avoid tiny links in the cart drawer.
Simple style recipes
- Light background (very light gray or brand tint)
- Small border radius
- One benefit line + button
- White background + colored left border
- Headline in bold
- Benefit includes a number (example: “Save 10%”)
Best practices (what usually converts better)
- Lead with a real benefit. “Save 10%” usually works better than “Subscribe now.”
- Reduce fear. Add “Cancel anytime” or “Skip anytime” if it’s true for your subscription setup.
- Be specific. If you offer a schedule like “every 30 days,” mention it.
- Don’t show it to everyone. Only show it when a subscription is available for that item.
Common issues and quick fixes
This usually means the product does not have a working subscription option. Confirm the subscription option exists on the product and is available for the customer’s market/currency.
Update your visibility rules so prompts only appear for subscription-eligible items.
Shorten the headline, reduce the amount of body text, and increase padding. If there is a setting for max width or font size, adjust for mobile first.
Suggested placement in the cart drawer
- Best: Right under the item details (customers see it while they review items).
- Also good: Near the checkout button (customers see it at decision time).
- Avoid: At the very bottom where it may be missed, especially on mobile.
Testing checklist
- Add a subscription-eligible product to cart.
- Confirm the prompt appears only when it should.
- Try switching to subscription and confirm the cart updates correctly.
- Check on mobile and desktop.
- Make sure the savings/benefits text is accurate.
