Rewards, Progress Bar, and Free Gifts

What reward tiers are

Reward tiers are goals customers can reach in the cart to unlock perks. Each tier has:

  • A goal (example: $50 or 3 items)
  • A reward (example: free shipping, discount, or a free gift)
  • Messages (what shoppers see before and after they unlock it)
Reward tiers are meant to help shoppers add a little more to their cart so they feel like they are getting a better deal.

How tiers work in the cart

  • When the cart is below a goal, the tier shows as locked.
  • As the cart grows, the progress updates in real time.
  • When the customer reaches a goal, that tier becomes unlocked and the perk is earned.
  • If the customer removes items and drops below the goal, the tier can become locked again.

Choose your reward basis (cart total vs item count)

The reward basis decides what the app measures to unlock tiers.

In the app, go to the area where you manage Rewards (your tiers list). Look for a setting named Reward basis or similar.

Choose one:

  • Cart total: customers unlock tiers when their cart reaches certain money amounts (example: $50, $75, $100).
  • Item count: customers unlock tiers when they add enough items (example: 2 items, 3 items, 5 items).

After you choose a basis, set each tier goal using that same basis (money or item count). Keep goals spaced out so customers can clearly see the “next step.”

When to use cart total

  • You want to increase average order value (AOV).
  • Your store has a wide range of prices.
  • Free shipping or discounts make sense after a dollar amount (example: “Free shipping at $60”).

When to use item count

  • Your items are priced similarly, and quantity is the main driver.
  • You want more units per order (example: “Buy 3 items, get 10% off”).
  • Your customers understand “add 1 more item” faster than “spend $12 more.”
If your store sells many low-priced items, item count tiers can feel easier for customers to reach. If your store sells fewer high-priced items, cart total is usually clearer.

How the progress bar motivates customers

The progress bar shows shoppers how close they are to the next reward. This works because it makes the goal feel simple and reachable.

What customers typically see

  • A visual bar that fills up as they add items.
  • A next goal (the next tier they can unlock).
  • A short message telling them what to do next (example: “Add $10 more to get free shipping”).

Make the progress bar more effective

  • Use clear “next step” text: “Add $15 more” or “Add 1 more item.”
  • Keep early goals easy: the first tier should feel achievable for most customers.
  • Make rewards feel worth it: free shipping, a small discount, or a free gift are easy to understand.
  • Limit the number of tiers: too many goals can confuse shoppers. Most stores do best with 2–4 tiers.
Don’t set goals so high that most customers never unlock anything. If the bar never reaches a reward, shoppers can ignore it.

Examples you can copy

  • $50: Free shipping
  • $75: 10% off
  • $100: Free gift

Progress message ideas:

  • “Add $12 more to unlock free shipping.”
  • “You unlocked free shipping! Next: 10% off at $75.”
  • 2 items: 5% off
  • 3 items: 10% off
  • 4 items: Free gift

Progress message ideas:

  • “Add 1 more item to get 10% off.”
  • “Nice! 10% off unlocked. Add 1 more item to get a free gift.”

Common mistakes (and quick fixes)

  • Mistake: The tier goals don’t match the basis you chose.
Fix: If you chose item count, make sure goals are “2, 3, 4 items” (not dollar amounts). If you chose cart total, use money goals.
  • Mistake: Progress messages are too long.
Fix: Keep messages short and action-based: “Add $X more” or “Add 1 more item.”
  • Mistake: The next goal jump is too big.
Fix: Make smaller steps between tiers so customers feel steady progress.
