Product Upsells in the Cart Drawer

What cart upsell recommendations do

Cart upsell recommendations show extra products inside your cart drawer. Customers can add them with one click, without leaving the cart.

These recommendations are different from discounts, reward tiers, and Frequently Bought Together offers. This page only covers recommendation rules, sources, and templates.

Open the recommendations settings

In your app admin, open Cart Editor.

Open the section for Product Upsells or Recommendations (name may vary by plan/version). This is where you control what shows and when it shows.

Enable the recommendations block so it can show in the cart drawer.

Step 1: Choose your trigger (when the upsells show)

A trigger decides which carts will see your recommendations.

Use this when: you want the same recommendation rule to run for every cart.

  • Good for: best sellers, store-wide add-ons (like batteries, gift wrap), or a "top picks" list.
  • Not ideal for: products that only fit certain items (like a phone case that fits only one model).

Use this when: you only want upsells to show if certain items are in the cart.

  • Example: If cart has “Running Shoes,” recommend “Socks” and “Shoe Cleaner.”
  • This is the most controlled (and usually the most accurate) option.
If you sell items with many variants, choose the main product that represents them. Then test with a few variants to make sure the trigger behaves the way you expect.

Use this when: you want a rule to apply to a whole category.

  • Example: If cart has any item from “Skincare,” recommend “Face Mask” or “Travel Size.”
  • Great when you add new products often—your triggers stay up to date as long as items are in that collection.
If a product is removed from a collection, it will stop triggering that collection rule.

Common trigger setup

  • Start simple: Use All products with a safe, popular recommendation list.
  • Then get targeted: Add rules for your top product categories using Specific products or Collections.

Step 2: Choose the recommendation source (what products to show)

The source decides where the recommended items come from.

You choose the exact products to show.

  • Best for: full control, specific accessories, higher-margin items, seasonal promos.
  • What to check: product is active, in stock, and available in the customer’s market (if you sell in multiple markets).
Manual is the safest option when you want the same items every time, like "Gift wrap" or "Warranty".

Recommendations are pulled from a collection you choose.

  • Best for: rotating picks without constant updates.
  • Tip: Make a special collection like “Cart Upsells” so you control what can appear.

Shows your most popular products.

  • Best for: stores that want a simple, proven list.
  • Watch out: you may recommend products that don’t match the customer’s cart.

Shows your newest products.

  • Best for: new launches and new arrivals.
  • Watch out: new items may have low stock or limited variants.

Shows products that are related to what’s in the cart (based on your store’s product relationships).

  • Best for: matching accessories or add-ons.
  • Watch out: results depend on how well your store has “related” items set up.
If “Related” feels random, switch to Manual or a curated Collection for better control.

Source rules to set (recommended)

  • Exclude items already in the cart (so customers don’t see duplicates).
  • Hide out-of-stock items (to avoid frustration).
  • Limit the number of recommendations (usually 2–6 is enough).

Step 3: Pick a template (how the upsells look)

A template is the layout style for your recommendation cards (example: list, grid, or carousel). Pick one that matches your cart design and keeps the cart easy to scan.

Select the template you want for the recommendations block (for example: Grid, List, or Carousel if available).

Choose the details to show, like product image, title, price, compare-at price (if you use it), and star rating (if your review integration is enabled).

Use clear button text like Add, Add to cart, or Add for $X (if your template supports it).

Make sure the template looks good on mobile and does not push the checkout button too far down.

If your cart drawer already has several blocks (rewards, coupons, notes), use a compact template (like a small grid or carousel) so checkout stays easy to reach.

Recommended setup (quick recipe)

  1. Trigger: Collections (your main category collections)
  2. Source: Collection (a curated “Cart Upsells” collection per category)
  3. Template: Compact grid or carousel with 3–5 items max

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure the recommendations block is enabled in the Cart Editor.
  • Confirm your trigger matches the cart (correct product/collection).
  • If using Manual/Collection source, confirm products are active and in stock.
  • Switch from All products to Specific products or Collections.
  • Switch the source from Bestsellers/Newest to Manual or a curated Collection.

Turn on the setting to hide items already in cart (if available). If not available in your version, use Manual recommendations and avoid adding the same items.

  • Reduce the number of recommendations (try 2–4).
  • Use a smaller template (carousel/compact grid).
  • Place recommendations below the main cart items (so customers still see their cart first).
Don’t recommend items that are frequently out of stock. It creates a bad shopping experience and can lower conversion.
