Discounted Upsells

What discounted upsells do

Discounted upsells let you offer a special deal on the items you show as upsells in the cart drawer. This can help customers add one more item because the price looks better right away.

These settings only change the price shown and applied for the upsell offer. They do not change the normal product price in your Shopify store.

Set up a discounted upsell

In the app dashboard, go to Sales Boosters (AOV Features) → Product Upsells, then open the upsell you want to edit (or create a new one).

Find the Discount section and enable the option to Offer a discount (wording may vary).

Select the discount type:

  • Percent (example: 10% off)
  • Fixed amount (example: $5 off)

Type the amount you want to discount.

  • If you chose Percent, enter a number like 10 for 10%.
  • If you chose Fixed amount, enter a number like 5 for $5 (the app uses your store currency).

Use limits to control how the discount can be used. Common limit options include:

  • Limit per order (example: discount applies to 1 upsell item only)
  • Limit quantity (example: discount applies to first 2 units)
  • Minimum/maximum rules (if available in your upsell settings)

Choose limits that match your goal and protect your margins.

Turn on the setting like Hide products already in cart (or similar).

When this is enabled, a customer will not see an upsell card for an item they already added.

Save your changes. Then open your cart drawer and make sure the upsell shows the correct discounted price and message.

How the discount is applied

  • The discount is meant to apply when the customer adds the upsell item using the upsell button/card.
  • If the same product is added in another way (example: from a product page), your discount may not apply the same way, depending on your store’s discount rules and the customer’s path.
Best practice: Use a small, clear discount (like 10% or $5) and add a limit (like “1 per order”). This keeps the offer simple and helps protect profit.

Percent vs fixed discount (which should you use?)

Good for: stores with different price ranges, because the discount scales with the item price.

Example: 15% off looks fair on a $20 item and a $100 item.

Good for: simple offers that are easy to understand fast.

Example: “$5 off” works great on small add-ons (like accessories).

Show or hide items already in the cart

This setting controls whether customers can see an upsell for something they already have in their cart.

  • Hide enabled: cleaner cart, fewer repeats, less confusion.
  • Hide disabled: can be useful if you want customers to buy multiples (but it can also feel repetitive).
If you sell items customers often buy more than one of, hiding products already in the cart may reduce multi-item sales. Consider leaving it off for “repeat buy” items.

Troubleshooting (quick checks)

  • Confirm the Discount toggle is enabled for that upsell.
  • Check that the discount value is set (not blank).
  • Make sure your limits are not blocking the discount (example: limit set to 0, or already used in the cart).

This is normal when Hide products already in cart is enabled. The item is hidden to avoid showing the same upsell again.

Switch to a percent discount, or lower your fixed amount. A fixed discount can sometimes make an item look “almost free,” which may not be what you want.

Recommended settings to start

  • Discount type: Percent
  • Discount amount: 10–15%
  • Limit: 1 discounted upsell item per order
  • Hide items already in cart: On (for most stores)
