Create Reward Tiers (Free Shipping, Discount, Free Gift)

What you’ll set up

Reward tiers help you give shoppers a reason to add more to their cart. Each tier has:

  • a goal (example: spend $50),
  • a reward (example: free shipping, a discount, or a free gift), and
  • messages that show before and after the reward unlocks.
If you also use market-specific rewards (different goals by currency/market), set your market first on the rewards screen, then follow the steps below.

Create a tier from start to finish

In your app admin, go to Cart Editor → Sales Boosters (AOV Features) → Rewards / Progress Bar / Free Gifts (names may be slightly different depending on your app version).

Make sure rewards are enabled so you can preview your changes right away.

Click Add tier (or + Add).

You’ll now choose a reward type and set the goal.

Pick the reward you want shoppers to unlock:

  • Free shipping (great for first tier)
  • Discount (percent or fixed amount)
  • Free gift (adds a product as a gift when the goal is reached)
If you’re not sure, start simple: Tier 1 = Free shipping, Tier 2 = Discount, Tier 3 = Free gift.

Set the goal for this tier (example: $50).

  • If your rewards are based on cart total, enter the spend amount.
  • If your rewards are based on item count, enter the number of items.
Make sure your tier goals go from smaller to larger. If Tier 2 is lower than Tier 1, shoppers may see confusing progress.

Fill in the details for the reward type you chose:

  • Free shipping: confirm what shipping benefit is applied (based on your app settings).
  • Discount: choose percent or fixed amount, then enter the value.
  • Free gift: choose the gift product (and variant, if needed). If quantity options exist, set the gift quantity.
For free gifts, pick a product that stays in stock and is available in the markets you sell in.

Customize the message shoppers see while they are still working toward the goal.

Good examples:

  • Add $10 more to unlock free shipping
  • Add 1 more item to get 10% off
Keep it short and clear. Shoppers should understand what to do in one glance.

Customize the message shoppers see once they reach the goal.

Good examples:

  • Free shipping unlocked!
  • You unlocked 10% off
  • Free gift added to your cart
If you use confetti or unlock celebrations, this message is usually what shoppers notice most.

Select an icon that matches the reward:

  • Truck icon for free shipping
  • Tag/percent icon for discount
  • Gift icon for free gift

If your app lets you change icon color, choose a color that matches your brand and is easy to see on your cart background.

Choose the tier/progress bar template that fits your cart style (example: compact, card style, or minimal).

After selecting a template, check the preview for:

  • text not being cut off on mobile,
  • icons lining up nicely,
  • the progress bar being easy to read.

Click Save.

If your app allows drag-and-drop, reorder tiers so they unlock in a logical path (Tier 1 → Tier 2 → Tier 3).

Recommended tier setups

  • Tier 1: Free shipping at a reachable goal (example: $40–$60)
  • Tier 2: Small discount at a higher goal (example: $80–$120)

This keeps rewards easy to understand and helps increase your average order value.

  • Tier 1: Free shipping
  • Tier 2: Discount
  • Tier 3: Free gift

Use the free gift as the “big win” so shoppers feel excited to keep adding items.

Quick checklist before you publish

  • Tier goals go from low to high.
  • Locked message clearly says what to do (add $X or add Y items).
  • Unlocked message clearly says what they got (free shipping / discount / gift).
  • Icons match the reward and are easy to see.
  • If you used a free gift, the gift product is in stock and available where you sell.
This page focuses on creating tiers. For where rewards show (empty cart, confetti, gift position) and advanced display options, see the related display options page in this documentation plan.
