Buttons and Checkout Area

What you can change here

The Buttons and Checkout Area settings control the main button your customers use to continue. You can:

  • Change the button text (what the button says)
  • Change the button style (colors, shape, size)
  • Turn the sticky checkout footer on or off
  • Choose what happens when customers click the button: go to checkout or go to the cart page
Names can look slightly different depending on your theme and app version, but you should see a section like Buttons, Checkout, or Checkout area inside the Cart Editor.

Open the Buttons and Checkout Area settings

In your app admin, open Cart Editor. In the left menu, find and open Buttons and Checkout Area (or similar). Use the preview to confirm how the button looks on desktop and mobile.

Customize the checkout button text

This changes the words customers see on the main button.

Look for a field like Checkout button text or Button label. Type the text you want (example: Secure checkout, Checkout now, or Continue to checkout). Make sure the text fits on one line, especially on mobile. Keep the label short and clear. Long text can wrap onto two lines and make the footer taller on mobile.

Style the checkout button (colors, shape, and size)

Use these settings to match your store’s branding and improve readability.

  • Background color: The main button color
  • Text color: Make sure it has strong contrast with the background
  • Border radius: Controls how round the corners look
  • Border (if available): Adds an outline style
  • Height / padding (if available): Makes the button easier to tap on mobile
If your button looks “missing,” it’s usually because the text color and background color are too similar (for example, white text on a light background).

Quick style checklist

  • Button text is easy to read (high contrast)
  • Button is tall enough to tap on mobile
  • Button doesn’t cover other important content

Enable or disable the sticky checkout footer

The sticky checkout footer keeps the checkout area pinned to the bottom of the cart drawer while customers scroll. This makes the checkout button easy to find.

Look for a toggle like Sticky checkout footer or Sticky footer. Enable it to keep the button visible while scrolling. Disable it to show the checkout area only in the normal page flow. Open the cart on a phone-sized preview and scroll. Confirm nothing is blocked. If your cart has a lot of upsells, rewards, or notes, a sticky footer can help customers check out faster because the button is always within reach.

Choose what the checkout button does

You can decide where customers go when they click the main button:

  • Go to checkout: Sends customers straight to Shopify checkout
  • Go to cart page: Sends customers to your full cart page first
Look for an option like Button action, Redirect to, or On click. Choose Checkout or Cart page. In your storefront preview, add an item to cart, open the cart drawer, then click the button to confirm it goes to the right place. Many stores prefer Go to checkout for a faster path to purchase. Use Go to cart page if your cart page has important info (like special shipping notes, bundling, or extra options) that customers should see.

Common issues

  • Make sure you are previewing the correct theme (published vs a draft theme).
  • Refresh the page and test in an incognito/private window.
  • Check if you have different settings for desktop vs mobile (if your editor supports device-specific settings).
  • Try reducing the footer height/padding (if available).
  • Shorten the button text so it stays on one line.
  • Disable the sticky footer if your cart layout is very tight on mobile.
  • Re-check the Button action setting and save.
  • Test with a fresh cart in an incognito/private window.
  • If you have more than one checkout button setting (main vs secondary), make sure you edited the correct one.

Recommended setup

  • Use a clear label like Checkout or Secure checkout.
  • Pick a strong, high-contrast button color.
  • Enable the sticky checkout footer if customers often scroll inside the cart drawer.
  • Send customers to checkout unless you have a reason to show the cart page first.
